Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT ARE RAILWAY SLEEPERS MADE OF AND WHERE DOÂ THEY COME FROM?
Railway Sleepers are made out of a wide range of timber types, a lot of the time it depends on which state they were made in and the timber that was on hand at the time. The most common timber types are Redgum, some Jarrah, Iornbark and Yellow Box. These Railway Sleepers come from all over Australia, depending on where the railway lines are being fixed and upgraded.
WHAT GRADES DO YOU HAVE AVAILABLE?
Railway Sleepers are graded according to their quality and structural integrity. There are several different grades with the most common being A, B and C. Depending on availability and quantities required, we can also supply AA Grade quality sleepers which are in the best quality possible.
WHAT AREÂ THE DIFFERENCES IN THE GRADES?
The Railway Sleepers are graded when they come into the holding yard. The condition of the sleepers determines the difference between AA, A, B and C.
AA Grade: Highest quality sleeper available, all corners square with little to no wear.
A Grade: All four corners in good condition, straight edges and very little wear.
B Grade: All four corners intact, some cracking and some structural wear.
C Grade: Well worn, some cracking and great for garden edging.
HOW MUCH DO THEY WEIGH AND WHAT SIZES ARE AVAILABLE?
The average Railway Sleeper weighs between 50-65kg each, depending on the grade.Â
There is a variety of sizes available. The most common size is 2.1m long, 225mm wide and 125mm high/thick. We can get longer sleepers up 5m long and 150mm high/thick which are great for more structural uses such as outdoor entertaining and bigger landscaping projects.
CAN WE CUT RAILWAY SLEEPERS?
Yes, we can cut them into different lengths and sizes however we do require some lead time on this depending on the cuts required. There is a cost involved which can be quoted on at the time of the request. These Sleepers would have to be paid in full before the order is commenced.
DO WE DELIVERY AND HOW MUCH?
We can delivery to most areas however it can depend on the numbers of sleepers and the grades required. Our supply yards do hold a good amount of stock at all times but depending on previous sales this can change. Delivery time will be determined on which yard the sleepers are coming from. It’s always best to check with the yard directly. Cost on delivery does depend on which yard the sleepers are coming from and the distance required to the delivery destination.
